PHOENIX -- The Arizona Cardinals have landed their top priority in free agency -- a left tackle. Danny Amendola Dolphins Jersey . A person with knowledge of the situation says the Cardinals and towering free agent Jared Veldheer have agreed on a five-year contract. The deal is worth $35 million, with $17 million guaranteed, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the agreement has not been officially announced. The contract includes another $2.5 million tied to playing time. The 6-foot-8, 320-pound lineman, entering his fifth NFL season, will be reunited with quarterback Carson Palmer. Veldheer blocked for Palmer when the two were together in Oakland. The deal first was reported by ESPN. Additionally, the Cardinals agreed to contracts with three of their free agents: a two-year deal for defensive end Frostee Rucker and one-year contracts for kicker Jay Feely and tight end Jake Ballard. The team also officially announced that left guard Daryn Colledge had been released. The Cardinals made left tackle their free agent priority in what looks to be a greatly revamped offensive line. Last season, the team traded left tackle Levi Brown -- who since has been released -- to the Pittsburgh Steelers and gave the job to inexperienced Bradley Sowell. He was adequate as the lines performance improved as the season wore on, but the Cardinals obviously didnt believe he was ready to take the job long-term. Veldheer, 26, missed the first 11 games last season with a torn triceps. He played in all 16 games in his first three seasons with Oakland. The Raiders chose him in the third round of the 2010 draft out of NCAA Division II Hillsdale College in Michigan. Oakland reportedly had considered using the franchise tag on Veldheer but instead chose to let him go. With the release of Colledge, the Cardinals could have two new guards. One of them, 2013 first-round draft pick Jonathan Cooper, missed all of last season with a broken leg. The leading candidate for the other guard spot is Earl Watford, a fourth-round draft pick last season. If Arizona doesnt re-sign free agent right tackle Eric Winston, the lone returnee on the offensive line would be centre Lyle Sendlein. 18:18ET 11-03-14 Robert Quinn Jersey .The Canadiens will visit the Boston Bruins at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., on New Years Day 2016, taking hockeys oldest rivalry outside. It was special in 2010 just to be there with the history behind Fenway Park and all that, Bruins centre Patrice Bergeron said. Minkah Fitzpatrick Dolphins Jersey . -- Theres nothing like winning to bring hope for a struggling team.Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic will leave the club after eight years at the end of the season. Manager David Moyes had previously indicated he wanted Vidic to stay, but the 32-year-old Serbian defender on Friday announced plans to leave when his contract expires. "I have decided that I will move on at the end of this season," Vidic said. "I want to challenge myself again and try to make the best of myself in the coming years. "Im not considering staying in England as the only club I ever wanted to play for here is Manchester United and I was lucky enough to be part of this club for so many years." Inter Milan has already been suggested as a potential destination for the strong and commanding centre back, who can now start to talk to rival clubs. "Ive got a few options to move on and I will choose the right one for me and for my family," Vidic said. The statement, issued by United, contained no comments from Moyes, who is facing a tough task rebuilding a team that is currently seventh in a league it won by 11 points last May before Alex Ferguson retired aftter 26 years in charge. Josh Sitton Dolphins Jersey. Another centre back, the 35-year-old Rio Ferdinand, might also have no future at the club beyond this season, while 40-year-old midfielder Ryan Giggs is nearing the end of his playing career and is already on the coaching staff. Vidic played a key role in Uniteds title triumphs since making his debut at the start of 2006 after joining from Spartak Moscow for seven million pounds ($11 million). Vidic has won the Premier League five times as well as the Champions League and the Club World Cup. But, after being injured in a Champions League fixture in December 2011, Vidic required major knee surgery and endured extended spells on the sidelines. "Its the last year of my contract and I have had eight wonderful years here," Vidic said. "My time at this great club will always rank as the best years of my career. "I never could have imagined winning 15 trophies and I will certainly never forget that fantastic night in Moscow (in the 2008 Champions League final win over Chelsea), memories that will live with me and the fans forever." EAST RUTHERFORD, N. Bennie Logan Titans Jersey .J. - The weather forecast for the first Super Bowl in an outdoor stadium in a cold-weather city is nothing out of the ordinary. National Weather Service meteorologist Anthony Gigi said Monday the forecast for Sundays NFL title game at MetLife Stadium calls for temperatures to reach a high of 39 with a low of 27, which is average for the area. There is little threat of precipitation. Gigi, who is based in Mount Holly, said a system is expected to pass through the region on Saturday night with the potential for a mixture of snow and rain. Since the Jets and Giants were awarded the Super Bowl in May 2010, there have been fears that a huge snowstorm would affect the game. The league and state officials have contingency plans for that scenario, including moving the game to Friday, Saturday or Monday, or changing the scheduled 6:25 p.m. starting time on Sunday. The coldest kickoff temperature in Super Bowl history was 39 degrees at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans for Super Bowl VI, when Dallas beat Miami 24-3. Yonder Alonso homered with two outs in the ninth inning to tie the game and Cameron Maybin hit an RBI bloop single with two outs in the 11th to give the Padres a 4-3 victory Saturday night. Chase Headley started the winning rally when he singled to left with two outs off Craig Stammen (0-2). Alonso walked before Maybin singled in front of right-fielder Jayson Werth. Headley easily beat the throw home. "I managed to get just enough bat on it," Maybin said. "It feels real great. Were grinding, man. It was bigger to get a win tonight. Weve been scuffling but weve been battling every night. For me it was huge because we have a chance to win the series tomorrow." Joaquin Benoit (2-0) pitched a perfect 11th for the win. Alonso tied the game at 3 in the ninth when he homered into the Jack Daniels party deck atop the right-field wall on a 1-1 pitch from Rafael Soriano. It was Alonsos fifth homer and Sorianos second blown save in 14 opportunities. Alonsos shot denied Washington rookie Blake Treinen his first big league win. Treinen was on track for the win after Ian Desmond hit a 432-foot, two-run home run with two outs in the seventh inning to give the Nationals a 3-2 lead. Cashner left with a 2-0 lead after six innings in his return from the disabled list. The tall Texan allowed only two hits, struck out five and walked one on 70 pitches. Out since mid-May with a sore right elbow, Cashner retired his final 16 batters and lowered his ERA to 2.13. "Its good having him back out there," Maybin said. "Hes a bulldog. Were confident whenever that guys out there." Cashner got in trouble in the first inning when the Nationals had runners on second and third with one out. But catcher Rene Rivera threw out Kevin Frandsen when he strayed too far off third and Ryan Zimmerman forced Adam LaRoche at second to end the inning. "It was fun to get back," Cashner said. "First inning there was a little trouble, buut it was a big throw by Rene getting that out there. Malcolm Butler Jersey. I think my fastball had the most movement Ive had in a long time." Nick Vincent replaced Cashner and surrendered the lead in a span of five batters. LaRoche doubled with one out and scored on Ryan Zimmermans double to right. With two outs, Desmond homered well over the 396 sign in centre field. The Padres had the potential winning run on second after Rivera doubled off the left-field wall with one out in the 10th. Chris Denorfia struck out and Everth Cabrera flied out to left. Rivera was stranded at third in the eighth after he doubled to left and was sacrificed by pinch-hitter Denorfia. Cabrera flied out to centre and Carlos Quentin, pinch-hitting for left-hander Will Venable against righty Tyler Clippard, struck out. Treinen was making his third career start. He allowed two runs and five hits in six innings, struck out one and walked one. After his last start on May 22 his spot was skipped due to two days off. San Diego took a 2-0 lead against the rookie in the fourth on RBI doubles by Headley and Maybin. "I felt good physically," Treinen said. "I felt like I was getting myself in trouble by getting behind in counts. But I made pitches when I needed to and then in that one inning I threw some pitches out over the plate." NOTES: The Padres drafted Johnny Manziel, the Cleveland Browns quarterback and 2012 Heisman Trophy winner while at Texas A&M, in the 28th round of the MLB draft, the 837th player taken. ... The Nationals drafted Ryan Ripken, the son of Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr., in the 15th round. ... Nationals 3B Anthony Rendon sat out with a sore right hand. He was struck trying to field Carlos Quentins smash in the fourth inning and committed a throwing error. He committed a fielding error the next inning. Manager Matt Williams said Rendons hand was swollen and "pretty sore." ... To make room for Cashner, LHP Jason Lane was designated for assignment. ... NHL and NHLPA executives are expected to announce on Friday the details of the rekindled World Cup of Hockey, a tournament that will feature eight teams, including two unconventional ones. Kirby Puckett Jersey . Besides Canada, the U.S., Russia, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Finland, the league and union will announce a European All-Star team will participate. That team will be stocked with players who come from countries other than those participating as nations. Also, the tournament will feature a team with North American players under the age of 23. An executive with an NHL sponsor confirmed the details to TSN. The tournament will also feature a best-of-three final, which will help to drive up the broadcast and sponsor rights for the tournament both in North America and Europe. The National Hockey League and its players association have told team executives they hope to generate between $75 million and $100 million from the rekindled World Cup of Hockey. A person familiar with the matter told TSN that the tournament, which is scheduled to be held in September 2016, will raise about half its revenue from the sale of broadcast and internet streaming rights. The NHL and NHLPA have predicted those rights may garner close to $50 million. Its a gamble to spend so much on a tournament like the World Cup when theres no guarantee Team Canada will advance beyond the round robin portion. But if it does, there could be a big payoff in TV ratings. The final of the World Cup will be a best-of-three format, TSN has learned. Besides TV rights, the NHL and NHLPA will also sell sponsorship rights to the World Cup. They anticipate selling to eight premier corporate sponsors and negotiating deals of at least $1.5 million in each category, a source told TSN. The NHL and NHLPA will also garner revenue from ticket and merchandise sales. However, its expected that the NHL and the Players Association will have to pay Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment at least $5 million for hosting the three-week tournament. While executives with the Montreal Canadiens wanted to host some of the World Cup games at the Bell Centre, the NHL and its players union decided to host all of the games in Toronto. That way, if the tournament is a success, they could auction off the rights to host the games in 2019, perhaps, to the city that offers the best revenue guarantee - be it Montreal, New York, Stockholm, Moscow, or another city. To be sure, there are still many unanswered questions about how much profit the NHL and players union will generate from the World Cup. They need to pay for insurance for all of the players. Typically, the NHL and the Players Association buy premiums that offer better coverage than simply career-ending policies. Payouts are rare, but they do happen. The Islanders John Tavares, for instance, was covered by an insurance policy when he was injured during the Winter Olympics earlier this year in Sochi, Russia. The Islanders were compensated by an insurance company for the time he missed. Its unclear how much insurance will cost the NHL and NHLPA. Then Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson said last August that it would cost at least $1 million simply to pay for insurance for the 47 Canadian players invited to Team Canada workouts in advance of the Winter Olympics. NHL player agent Allan Walsh said some NHL players have been skeptical over whether its a good idea to steer away from the national team concept. Some players believe this should be limited to players playing for their country, Walsh told TSN. What are you playing for if its Team Young Guns or European All Stars? What are you playing for? Thats a problem. Its an issue. Walsh said featuring a young guns team particularly could lead to lopsided scores. The downside is that team gets pounded, Walsh said. I dont think it would have an impact on the players psychology or career - just an impact on the legitimacy of the team in the tournament, when people sit back and say whether this kind of team was a good or bad idea. Still, Walsh and other agents said there could be a great payoff for the league from marketing a team built around young stars like Nathan McKinnon, Connor McDavid and Jonathan Drouin. Walsh said that while some fans have called for the NHL and NHLPA to include teams from Slovakia or Slovenia, that might not be practical, since the tournament is run by the league and its players association - both of which want to use the event to build the profile of their own players, not those playing in leagues overseas. MINNEAPOLIS -- Former Minnesota Vikings cornerback A.J. Jefferson has been charged with assaulting his girlfriend. Hennepin County prosecutors charged Jefferson on Wednesday with one count of felony domestic assault by strangulation. Jefferson is accused of assaulting his girlfriend at their Eden Prairie home Monday. According to the complaint, Jefferson and his girlfriend began arguing after an evening out. Jefferson left and she went to sleep in the guest bedroom. The complaint says she awoke to Jefferson yelling at her for ignoring his text messages, and he grabbed her neck. The Vikings released Jefferson a few hours after his arrest. He remains in jail and is due in court Monday. Online court records do not list a defence attorney. The charges filed Tuesday against former Biogenesis of America owner Anthony Bosch and six others marked one of the biggest salvos yet in a case that has dragged on for nearly two years. The case has sparked lawsuits, mudslinging and suspensions against numerous major leaguers, including Rodriguez. Also charged was Yuri Sucart, 52, a cousin of Rodriguez who the New York Yankees third baseman has said provided him with steroids from 2000 to 2003 when he played for the Texas Rangers. Sucart and the others are accused of acting as recruiters, setting up meetings between the athletes and Bosch, who introduced himself as "Dr. T," authorities said. Professional athletes paid up to $12,000 a month for the drugs provided by Biogenesis, while high schoolers paid up to $600 a month. All the clients were promised that the substances would not be found through drug testing, prosecutors said. "He is not a doctor," Mark R. Trouville, chief of the Miami Drug Enforcement Administration office, said of Bosch. "He is a drug dealer." U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer said Bosch did not have a medical license, making what happened all the more dangerous. "As with many drug cases, these defendants were motivated by one thing -- by money," Ferrer said. Major League Baseball was not part of the criminal investigation and declined comment. No athletes were charged nor named in court documents, and it is unclear how many may have been involved. However, authorities said Bosch admitted to providing performance-enhancing drugs to 18 high schoolers. For now, Bosch has pleaded not guilty and his bond was set at $100,000. He faces up to 10 years in prison. "In terms of an agreement to co-operate and plead guilty, Bosch has agreed to do that," Ferrer said. Michael McCann, director of the sports and entertainment law centre at the University of New Hampshire School of Law, said its unlikely that the players involved in this scandal will face criminal charges, unless theres any evidence that a player went beyond using drugs and into distributing them. "They could lose an endorsement contract because of a morals clause in their contract, but if that were to happen I think it would have already happened," McCann said. "In terms of punishment from baseball, baseball has punished them." The prosecution may have taken so long because investigators might haave wanted to confirm the information they were getting from Bosch, even if he was co-operating, McCann said.dddddddddddd "Hes not somebody with a great track record, there are reasons to doubt him in terms of his credibility," he said. Joe Tacopina, a lawyer for Rodriguez, said the arrests Tuesday represent a degree of closure for Rodriguez and will enable him to focus on an eventual return to baseball. "It sort of reinforces the notion that Alex committed no crime, number one," Tacopina said. "And number two, quite frankly, this really signified the beginning of the end of the whole Biogenesis saga and allows Alex to focus on the future going forward." Rodriguez is currently serving a season-long suspension, the longest penalty in the sports history related to performance-enhancing drugs. He was the only one 14 players involved in the scandal to contest his penalty. However, since the investigation is ongoing, it remains possible that more players could eventually face sanctions as a result of the Biogenesis probe. Rodriguez denied taking steroids while playing for the Yankees, though his cousin was banned from the teams clubhouse, charter flights and other activities after Rodriguez said Sucart obtained the steroids he used while playing for the Rangers. Bosch was charged with conspiracy to distribute testosterone, as was Sucart, Carlos Javier Acevedo, Jorge Augustine Velazquez, Christopher Benjamin Engroba, Juan Carlos Nunez and Lazaro Daniel Collazo -- a well-known youth and college baseball coach who has worked at schools including Miami, Louisville, Florida State and South Florida. Acevedo pleaded not guilty and his bond was set at $100,000. Engroba pleaded not guilty and his bond was $50,000. No other pleas were entered Tuesday. Court documents say that from October 2008 through December 2012, Bosch wilfully conspired to distribute the anabolic steroid testosterone. Prosecutors also announced the arrest of three others in a drug ring discovered during the course of the investigation into Biogenesis. However, that case, which centred around the stimulant known as "molly," was not directly connected to Bosch. A Miami New Times report from January 2013, which sparked MLBs investigation, said Rodriguez had bought human growth hormone and other substances from 2009 to 2012 from Boschs clinic. The newspaper said it had obtained records detailing the purchases by Rodriguez and other ballplayers. MLB had sued Bosch and his clinic but withdrew the lawsuit in February. The lawsuit had accused them of conspiring with players to violate their contracts by providing them with banned substances. SALT LAKE CITY -- Sacramento blew a big lead in the fourth quarter and the Kings began to show that look of defeat. "You saw it on everybodys face. It was like Here we go again," Isaiah Thomas said. "But I just told guys, Lets just stick together. Win or lose, lets stick together this time." Thomas noticed his teammates started keeping their heads up. He saw something different in their eyes. "We stayed together and fought hard. We fought until the end," said Thomas, who scored 23 of his 26 points after halftime to help the Kings snap a six-game skid with a 112-102 overtime victory against the Utah Jazz on Saturday night. "I just wanted to be aggressive and make some plays. I saw some openings and took what the defence gave to try and get myself going. That set up everything else," Thomas said. After early foul trouble, DeMarcus Cousins finished with 28 points, dominating the paint in overtime. "We stayed poised. Usually when we get in those situations, we kind of get in a panic mode and make the situation worse," Cousins said. Trey Burke gave the Jazz their final lead at 102-101 with a 3-pointer, but the Kings scored the final 11 points of overtime. Burke finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Thomas clinched it when he stole the ball from Alec Burks and got a return pass from Cousins for a layup to give the Kings a 110-102 lead with 57 seconds left. "It was a big play. I didnt think Burks was going to pass it, so I helped more than I usually would," Thomas said. "I got my hands on it and then DeMarcus made a good play by throwing the ball ahead." Kings guard Ben McLemore made a 3-pointer with 3.2 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 97-97. "Isaiah was telling me after the huddle that I was going to hit a big shot," McLemore said. "And I thought I was going to make it even though I had missed a couple of 3s earlier." Thomas added, "He knocked down the biggest shot of his NBA career so far." Gordon Hayward had 22 points for Utah, but didnt score in overtime. The Jazz were missing injured starters Derrick Favours and Marvin Williams. Thomas made two free throws to cut the Jazz lead to 93-92 with 37.9 seconds remaining. Burke and Burks each converted two free throws apiece in the final 18.2 seconds around Cousins inside shot before McLemore hit his big 3. "Weve been waiting on one of those from Ben," Cousins said. Burkes runner at the regulation buzzer bounced off the back of the iron. Burke scored five points to spark a 16-0 Jazz run in the fourth quarter that erased Sacramentos nine-point lead. Hayward capped the run with back-to-back jumpers and a free throw to make it 91-84 with 2:59 to play. "It hurts. We had the game," Hayward said. The Jazz and the Kings entered the night tied with Milwaukee for the fewest wins (4) in the NBA. Four of the defeats in the Kings six-game skid were by a combined 11 points and they looked ready to turn a corner. McLemore followed his career-high 20 points in Los Angeles with 15 points and nine rebounds against the Jazz. All the losing precipitated an impromptu team meeting at a Salt Lake City hotel Saturday morning. Sacramento coach Mike Malone asked his players for input on how they could change course. "I said we need to be tougher to guard," Thomas said. "Everybody spoke on it and Coach accepted it. And it worked. We ran a couple different plays to get DeMarcus the ball and it opened the floor." Cousins overcame early foul trouble and was extremely efficient in 28 minutes, going 10 of 15 from the field. Favours, a potential foil for Cousins who had started all 21 games this season for the Jazz, sat out with a sore lower back. "We got their bigs in foul trouble. We caught a little bit of a break with Favours not being healthy, so we wanted to establish DeMarcus in the post, feed off of him," Malone said. NOTES: Cousins committed two fouls in the first minute of the game and Utahs Mike Harris had five fouls before halftime. The Senators placed Conacher on waivers on Tuesday. LOS ANGELES - For the Raptors, Saturday mornings flight back to Toronto couldnt come soon enough. Its that time of the year. Players are tired, or hurting, or both. Some are looking ahead to the events theyll be participating in during All-Star Weekend, others are looking forward to their midseason vacation time. Its been nine days since the Raptors set out on a five-game West Coast trip and the fatigue was evident as they backed into a 2-3 record on the excursion. "We cant use that as an excuse," Dwane Casey said after his team suffered their third loss in the last four games, falling 118-105 to the Clippers in LA Friday. "We knew that coming in, that were getting ready for the all-star break, mental fatigue is setting in, everybody is preparing for the break but its not here yet, we have games to go and business to take care of." After taking care of business in two of their first three games on the trip, Caseys team lost themselves in a pair of losses to the Kings - a bottom dweller in the West - and the Clippers, one of the conferences elite. The Raptors fell behind early, giving up 67 points in the first half of each game, committing a total of 70 fouls and putting their opponent on the line 105 times over the course of three days. The commonality, according to Casey, was a lack of mental and physical toughness against the likes of DeMarcus Cousins Wednesday and the duo of Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan two days later. "The guys are down because they know that we physically didnt take care of business," he said. "The physicality of the game is something we have to get ready for, especially if were thinking about the playoffs because its a physical game in the paint, setting screens, rebounding, going to the basket. All those things are there if youre serious about making the playoffs." Overall, a 2-3 record on the trip is hardly disappointing, its probably on par with what was expected of them going in, realistically. However, they should lose some sleep over the way they ended the road swing. No one expected them to win on Wednesday, not against a scorned Clipper team coming off a tough loss at home to the defending champion Heat. After coming out flat again, Casey was forced to get creative midway through the third quarter, opting to deploy the hack-a-Jordan strategy, a maneuver designed to extend the game by putting a poor free throw shooter - this case, DeAndre Jordan - on the line. Jordan, a 44 per cent free throw shooter, made just 10 of his 22 tries from the line, 14 of those attempts were gift wrapped and delivered to him from Casey. The move was not popular amongst the hometown crowd but for a coach on the verge of defeat, why not take a shot? Although it shaved just two points off the Clippers 20-point lead, directly, it slowed the game down and took the home team out of their rhythm. "We had to do something," Casey said. "Physically they were just manhandling us in the paint. I thought that changed the game a little bit." Toronto would cut its deficit to nine going into the fourth quarter. By that point the Raptors had run out of gas, understandably so. Less than a week before All-Star Weekend, the Raptors are a beat up team. Kyle Lowry is battling a knee injury while both DeMar DeRozan and the slumping Amir Johnson are playing on sprained ankles. DeRozan was the one Raptor who looked at home in LA, in actuality he was. The Compton-born guard scored 36 points, the most hes ever had in nine career games at Staples Center, knocking down a career-high 17 free throws. After averaging 10.0 points on 31 per cent shooting in his first five career games back home, DeRozan has scored 28.5 on 52 per cent over his last four contests in LA. Its yet another sign of DeRozans growth on and off the floor in his fifth season. "Its always good to come home and see the family, or whatever, but I dont put as much pressure on myself as I did my first year or even my second year," said the first-time all-star. "I dont try to come out here and prove a point that Im from here or whatever, I just come here and play." Johnson spent most of Friday night chasing down Blake Griffin, who scored 36 points on 13-of-18 shooting in 28 minutes. It was an impossible task for a player that has been slowed by the injury for a week and a half. The nine-year vet is used to playing through pain and plans to continue doing so but he couldnt hide his frustration after the loss. "That nagging pain is just bothering me," said Johnson, who had eight points in 24 minutes against the Clippers. "I want to but there are just some plays I really cant get to the ball or make a play because my ankle just holds me back." "I feel like I can do a lot better. Im trying to baby it but at the same time Im trying to go hard out there. Once the schedule turns and I can rest it a little bit, Ill definitely come through. Lucky for Johnson and the rest of the ailing Raptors, theyll be en route back to Toronto Saturday after spending one more night on the road. There, theyll host the Pelicans and the Hawks before going their separate ways for the weekend, NBA all-star festivities. The schedule eases up the rest of the way. The Raptors - who have played 28 games on the road, most in the East - only have 13 more to go away from the Air Canada Centre. Fridays contest against the Clippers marked their last road game against a winning Western Conference team. "We want to compete every time we walk out but the main thing is were building and were getting better in some areas and some areas were not," said Casey. "The physicality department, thats going to take some more time for guys to figure that out. My thing is competing, you go out and compete and fight physically and then you let the chips fall where they may and there were some situations where I didnt think we competed physically." Among the early surprises, the Portland Trail Blazers have been outstanding, and sit fourth after being ranked 15th in the preseason. Other teams that have been mediocre, yet still much better than expected, include the Minnesota Timberwolves (up from 23 to 11), the Orlando Magic (from 28 to 17) and the Phoenix Suns (from 30 to 16). Going the other way, injuries have hit the Chicago Bulls, down from seven to 13, and the Memphis Grizzlies, down from six to 15. The Cleveland Cavaliers havent made any progress, despite some expectations that could happen this year, and theyve plummeted from 12 to 27.dddddddddddd. Both New York teams have been a mess. The Knicks crashed from 10 to 25 with their 3-11 record and the Brooklyn Nets are 4-11, but missing four rotation players due to injury, and sit 30th after being ranked fourth in the preseason. The Toronto Raptors are up a couple of spots, from 22 to 20, after a 6-8 start to the season. SACRAMENTO, Calif. - While a fast-paced offence has become more of a fixture in recent years, the San Antonio Spurs can still grind out games when needed. Marco Belinelli scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, Kawhi Leonard had 15 points and seven rebounds and the NBA-leading Spurs turned in a vintage performance to beat the Sacramento Kings 99-79 on Friday night for their 12th straight win. "It was an ugly game, wasnt it?" Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said, proudly. Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker added 14 points apiece, and Tiago Splitter had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Spurs (52-16), who remain 1 1/2 games ahead of Oklahoma City and Indiana for the leagues best record. The winning streak also is San Antonios longest since rolling off 12 in a row in November 2010. Sacramento outshot the Spurs 40 per cent to 38.7 per cent but was outrebounded 52 to 48. San Antonio forced 15 turnovers and committed only nine, pulling away in the fourth quarter behind its shut-down defence. "It was one of those games where we couldnt make a shot," Ginobili said. "The good thing is that they couldnt, either." Isaiah Thomas scored 18 points and DeMarcus Cousins had 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Kings, who were held to a season low in points against a franchise that has dominated them — like a lot of other teams — for a decade. The Spurs finished 3-0 against Sacramento this season. Theyve also won 30 of the past 33 meetings, including nine straight overall and 11 in a row in Californias capital city. "If you had told me going into tonights game that we hold the Spurs to 99 points, 38 per cent from the field, and 20 per cent from three-point, I wouldve said we were going to win the game," Kings coach Michael Malone said. "They just keep at it for 48 minutes, and thats why I think that they are the favourite to win the NBA championship." The Spurs shook off a slow start and started rolling late in the second quarter, speeding up the pace and looking for those "great, not good" shots the way Popovich always preaches. San Antonio led 47-37 at intermission despite shooting 1 for 13 from 3-point range. The Spurs finished 5 for 25 from beyond the arc, while the Kings were 4 for 14. Tim Duncan also missed his first seven shots for San Antonio before banking in a jumper in the third quarter. He finished with 10 points on 3-for-12 shooting and added nine rebounds and six assists. "Its a great reminder that we can win with defence," said Parker, who also had five rebounds and four assists. "It was not pretty. We were not shooting well. But sometimes you need to win those kind of games. We know in the playoffs, sometimes the ball doesnt go in." The Kings kept the Spurs within striking distance, and appeared to move even closer when Thomas made a 3-pointer as the third quarter ended. Instead, officials ruled Thomas shot came after the buzzer — and upheld the call after a video review. Belinelli swished a jumper at the start of his big fourth quarter to lift the Spurs ahead 73-57. And Duncan quieted Sacramento for good with a jumper that gave San Antonio an 86-69 lead with 5:35 to play. "I dont think we moved the ball enough," Cousins said. "We came down and got quick shots. That kind of hurt us. If we moved the ball a lot better we wouldve had a chance at this game." NOTES: Kings F Royce White, the 16th overall pick in the 2012 draft by Houston, made his NBA debut. I might get a chance." The 15-year NHL defenceman made the most of a rare shootout opportunity, scoring in the 13th round to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders on Thursday night. "It just happened to go in," said Salo of his first successful shootout goal, coming in his third ever attempt. "It was obviously good for us. Its a good feeling." The shootout was tied at 4 through 12 rounds before Salo put a backhander past Evgeni Nabokov. Ben Bishop preserved the win by making a glove save on Johan Sundstrom. Ryan Callahan had two goals for the Lightning, who trail Montreal by two points for second place in the Atlantic Division. Tampa Bay, 6-0-4 in its last 10 games, has two games in hand on the Canadiens. "First and foremost, we got two points," Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said. "So, thats what we need out of the game. Were going to have to do better than that. Give the Islanders some credit, they played really hard. Definitely, there were positives in the game, but as a whole, were a better 5-on-5 team than we showed tonight." The Islanders, out of the playoff race, got goals from Ryan Strome and Matt Donovan. Right wing Kyle Okposo, who has a team-best 27 goals and 69 points, was a late scratch due to a lower body injury. "We are trying to play hard at this point of the season, andd were trying to get better each and every day," Islanders defenceman Travis Hamonic said.dddddddddddd "I thought we played a pretty good game." All three games between the teams this season were decided in a shootout, with the road team winning the first two. "I dont mind them when were winning," Callahan said. "When you lose them, you hate them." Callahan pulled the Lightning even at 2 on his second goal of the game, coming on a rebound 5:50 into the third. "We didnt have our best game, but really willed a way to win," Bishop said. Donovan put the Islanders up 2-1 while lunging forward in the slot at 9:17 of the second. It ended the defencemans 39-game goal drought. After Callahan redirected Radko Gudas shot past Nabokov just 29 seconds into the second, Strome put a shot past Bishop to tie it at 1 at 1:33. New York had a short-handed goal by Hamonic from centre ice waved off due to an offside call in the second. Hamonic stole Bishops errant long-range pass from the corner and put the puck into the vacated net. The Islanders failed to score during a 5-on-3 power play early in the third. Tampa Bay came up empty on a power play that covered the final 69 seconds of overtime. ARLINGTON, Texas -- Robbie Grossman and the Houston Astros finally got to Yu Darvish -- and moved out of last place in the AL West. Grossman snapped an 0-for-28 slide with a career-high four hits as the Astros completed a three-game sweep of the Texas Rangers with an 8-4 victory over the All-Star pitcher who dominated them so many times in the past. "The way we came into here, after losing seven in a row, for our guys to respond the way they responded in this three-game series, Im extremely proud of them," manager Bo Porter said. Grossman and rookie George Springer homered for the Astros, who moved into fourth place by a percentage point over slumping Texas. It is the first time in their two seasons since switching leagues that the Astros have not been in fifth place in the five-team AL West after mid-April. "When you look at where were at today, obviously we feel like we have improved as a ballclub," Porter said. "At the same time, when we get to the end of the year, well see where were at. It definitely feels good to be playing good baseball right now." Springer also made an incredible running catch in the third inning. The centre fielder leaped on the warning track, reached over his head and held onto the ball when he slammed into the wall. Houston had 28 runs and 42 hits in the series against its in-state rival that won 17 of 19 against the Astros last season. The Rangers lost for the 10th time in 11 games and have dropped 18 of 21 overall. At 38-53, their .418 winning percentage is the worst in the majors -- just behind Arizona and Houston, both 39-54 for a .419 mark. "Its been really tough. Its been frustrating," outfielder Alex Rios said. "This is a season that I believe that were all going to remember in a bad way." Dallas Keuchel (9-5), one of five candidates in Internet balloting for the final spot on the AL All-Star team, allowed four runs and eight hits over 6 2-3 innings. While it wasnt his best performance, he was happy to beat the Rangers. "Just because theyve beaten us up the last couple years," Keuchel said. "Theyve been the big brother, of sort." Darvish (8-5), who had thrown 20 consecutive scoreless innings while winning his last three home starts, gave up a season-high 10 hits and six runs. He struck out eight and needed 109 pitches to get through six innings. Against Houston at home in April, Darvish allowed one hit over eight scoreless innings. The Japanese ace also had two near no-hitters on the road against the Astros last season, one in which he retired the first 26 batters. Carlos Corporan had a two-run double in the sixth to break a 4-all tie. An inning later, Springer hit his 19th homer, a two-run shot off reliever Jason Frasor. Grossmans solo homer, about 329 feet into the right-field corner, made it 4-all with two outs in the fifth. He also had a double in the first inning and an RBI single in the third. Before getting recalled this week by the Astros, Grossman had an 18-game hitting streak at Triple-A Oklahoma City. But he was hitless in a span of 28 at-bats in the majors after going 0 for 4 on Tuesday night to start his third stint with Houston this season. Adrian Beltre extended his hitting streak to 13 games with an RBI single in the Texas first. The All-Star third baseman is batting .494 (38 for 77) in his last 20 home games, and is second in the AL at .336 overall. Houston took a 2-1 lead in the second when Corporan hit a two-out double before Enrique Hernandez tripled and scored on a wild pitch. "The team is in a skid, but Im telling you, theyre playing," Texas manager Ron Washington said. " Were not pitching very well. ... We just dont have a sustainable offence to support whats going on right now." NOTES: Springer also made a running catch in the right-centre gap to end the third. ... Beltre was called out on strike three in the third when he stepped out of the box but wasnt granted time. When he came to bat in the sixth, Beltre had an animated conversation with plate umpire Bill Miller. Richards had a goal and an assist for the Kings, who came back from their break with their ninth victory in 13 games. Quick, who made 19 saves in his 26th career shutout, thought Los Angeles responded well to its lengthy stretch of rest and practice. "With the Olympic year, you miss some days here and there with practice and being able to work on the details," said Quick, a possible U.S. national team goalie. "So we had a good three practices where we were able to get some work done." Quick celebrated his 300th NHL game with his first regular-season shutout since last March 18, punctuating the win with a handful of scrambling saves late in the scoreless third period. Quick even kept his brother-in-law, Buffalos Matt Moulson, off the scoresheet. "Having him back there as a defenceman always makes me feel safe," said Drew Doughty, whose pass set up Kopitars goal in the second period. The Kings dropped tough games against Phoenix and Nashville last week. At 10-6, Los Angeles is off to another good start to the season after back-to-back trips to the Western Conference finals -- but good isnt enough in a division featuring Anaheim, San Jose, Phoenix and Vancouver. With Quick leading a solid defensive performance, Los Angeles won without two of its top forwards. Jeff Carter, the Kings top goal-scorer, missed his second straight game with a foot injury, and centre Jarret Stoll sat out for the first time this season with an upper-body injury. Linden Vey made his NHL debut for the Kings in their absence, centring the fourth line with Kyle Clifford and Jordan Nolan. Fellow youngster Tyler Toffoli had an assist for the second straight game since getting called up for the first time this season. Jhonas Enroth stopped 26 shots for the NHL-worst Sabres (3-14-1), who couldnt follow up their stunning win at San Jose with another surprise on their three-game California road trip. Buffalo hasnt won consecutive games all season. "I think we ouutchanced them in the five-on-five department," Buffalo captain Steve Ott said.dddddddddddd "Theyre a good veteran club that is used to playing in those kinds of situations, but I liked our effort tonight. It was the same as in San Jose. Our passion and pride has been way better in the last two games, and thats the way we have to play to have any success in this league." Defenceman Christian Ehrhoff left the Buffalo bench early in the third period with a lower-body injury. Buffalo coach Ron Rolston said Ehrhoff was fine. The Sabres play at Anaheim on Friday night. Buffalo controlled the flow of play early on, but the Kings broke through in the final minute of the first period, with Richards redirecting Jake Muzzins shot from the point for his fourth goal in six games. Kopitar scored during 4-on-3 play midway through the second period, putting a changeup one-timer past Enroth after a slick cross-ice give-and-go with Doughty. Kopitar has goals in three straight games and four in the past six since ending his 26-game regular-season goal drought late last month. "We played well at times in the game, but obviously we put them on the power play too much tonight," Rolston said. "Theyve been together for a long time, so they have continuity in their power play. "Its a 1-0 game, were on the power play, and two minutes later, they have (another power play). Thats not a very good recipe when you want to have a successful night." The Sabres, shut out for the fourth time already this season, hadnt visited Staples Center since Jan. 21, 2010. The Kings open a four-game road trip in Buffalo on Tuesday. NOTES: Moulson and Quick are married to sisters Alicia and Jaclyn Backman. Moulson was in the Kings organization from 2006-09, scoring six goals in 29 games in Los Angeles, but never catching on with the big-league club. Moulson had two goals and four assists in his first four games with the Sabres, who acquired him from the New York Islanders late last month. ... Los Angeles D Robyn Regehr faced Buffalo for the first time since the Sabres traded him to the Kings late last season. ... After Kings F Matt Frattin landed a hard check on Cody McCormick late in the second period, Buffalos 6-foot-8 Tyler Myers challenged the 6-foot Frattin to a fight. Frattin wrestled Myers to the ice, and Myers got an extra penalty for holding.
